Model Y Beat the Golf in Germany in September, 8,038 to 6,580. The Fine Print the Headline Skipped
By EV Bandit | Updated October 22, 2026
- In September, the Tesla Model Y was Germany's best-selling car with 8,038 registrations, ahead of the VW Golf's 6,580, per KBA figures as reported by Drive Tesla and Autonext.
- It is the second time the Model Y has beaten the Golf. Autonext puts the first in September 2022, when the Model Y posted 9,846.
- The Golf still leads 2026 with 65,445 registrations to the Model Y's 29,464, a gap of 35,981, per Autonext.
- Drive Tesla reports 88,599 EV registrations out of 256,774 new cars in September, about 35%, up 94.7% on a year earlier.
The Model Y beat the Golf in Germany in September, 8,038 registrations to 6,580. That is the headline, and it is accurate. The more useful question is what else the same tables say.
Both outlets read the same source, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Drive Tesla published the story on October 20 and Autonext worked from the KBA model tables. Their numbers agree where they overlap. Below is the headline set against the fine print.
The headline versus the fine print
| Claim | What the reports show | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Model Y was Germany's best-selling car in September | Yes: 8,038 registrations, against 6,580 for the Golf and 5,751 for the third-place Tiguan. | KBA figures per Autonext; Drive Tesla gives the same Model Y total. |
| It is the Golf's first defeat | No. Drive Tesla says it is the second time the Model Y has beaten the Golf, the first being four years earlier. Autonext puts that month at September 2022. | Both outlets. |
| Tesla had a stronger month than in 2022 | Not on volume. Autonext notes the Model Y won with 1,808 fewer cars than in September 2022, when it posted 9,846 against 7,095 Golfs. | Autonext, from KBA tables. |
| The Golf collapsed | It fell, but not off a cliff: down 906 units, or 12.1%, from 7,486 in September 2025. | Autonext. |
| The Model Y now leads Germany for the year | No. Autonext reports the Golf leads 2026 with 65,445 registrations to the Model Y's 29,464, a gap of 35,981. | Autonext, nine-month figures. |
| Electric cars are surging in Germany | Drive Tesla reports 88,599 EV registrations out of 256,774 new cars, about 35%, up 94.7% on a year earlier and 9% on August. | Drive Tesla, citing KBA. |
Autonext describes the month as a soft one for Volkswagen's best seller and credits Tesla's quarter-end delivery push for the result.
What this means for owners
For anyone who owns a Model Y, the takeaway is small and a little fun: a car you probably bought for practical reasons topped the chart in a country that built its car culture around the Golf. For anyone reading it as a sign of where the market is going, the fine print says be careful. One quarter-end month is not a trend line.
Drive Tesla also points to German federal subsidies, which it says began in May and can cover up to €6,000 for non-business buyers, as a possible help to Tesla's sales. That is the outlet's suggestion, not a measured effect, and we have not seen an analysis that isolates it.
For the U.S. side of the Model Y story, our earlier piece on Model Y U.S. sales through Q3 covers the home market.
What we could not confirm
Drive Tesla's account of the Golf figure was unclear on the page we read, so we used the Autonext KBA read for the Golf, Tiguan and 2022 comparisons. We did not open the KBA tables ourselves. We have no registration breakdown by trim, and neither outlet explains how much of September's total was end-of-quarter deliveries versus steady demand beyond Autonext's own reading.
FAQ
Is a registration the same as a sale? No. KBA counts new registrations in a month, which can lag deliveries.
Did the Model 3 do well too? Drive Tesla reports 4,512 Model 3 registrations, topping the mid-sized category.
Does this say anything about U.S. prices or availability? No.
