Rivian Opens Hands-Free Driving Beta to Invited Owners. Who Qualifies, What They Give Up, and What Is Not Yet Public

By EV Bandit | Updated October 21, 2026

At a glance. Rivian began sending invitations on October 15 to a closed beta of Point-to-Point, a hands-free driving feature that follows a programmed route. Only owners of second-generation R1 and R2 vehicles with an active Autonomy+ subscription can be considered, onboarding starts in California and Florida, and participants sign a non-disclosure agreement. Rivian's own support page and two outlets agree on the core rules and differ on a few details.
Key takeaways
  • Rivian began sending invitations on October 15 to a closed beta of Point-to-Point, a hands-free driving feature that follows a programmed route.
  • Only U.S. owners of Gen 2 R1 and R2 with an active Autonomy+ subscription can be considered; trials do not count, and Gen 1 and Canadian vehicles are excluded.
  • Participants must keep data collection on (including location and camera data), complete monthly surveys and sign an NDA. Participation is unpaid.
  • Rivian's page says late 2026 through the program and 2027 for wider rollout to eligible vehicles.

Tesla owners have had a version of this conversation for years. Now Rivian is running its own, with a gate on the door. According to Rivian's support page for the Autonomy Early Access Program, rolling invitations began October 15, Point-to-Point is the first feature offered, and a wider launch to eligible second-generation R1 and R2 owners is planned for 2027.

This page sorts what Rivian has published from what outlets have added, so you can see which parts rest on the company's own words.

The ledger

Launch timing Late 2026 through the program, 2027 for wider rollout to eligible vehicles Rivian support page
Subscription price $49.99 a month or $2,500 for lifetime access InsideEVs only; not on the support page we read

"Hands-off, but not eyes-off." InsideEVs, describing Rivian's supervision requirement

Where the record is not tidy

Rivian's page is not perfectly consistent with itself. The introduction describes invitations going to owners with a clean recent safety record, while the FAQ says safety is assessed at selection rather than at the initial invite. Neither wording tells an owner how many forward collision warnings are too many, and Rivian does not publish a threshold.

Camera data is the other soft spot. Rivian says applying does not share camera footage, and that selected participants receive a Participation Agreement describing what is collected and can decline it. Rivian also lists camera data sharing as a participation requirement. How those two statements fit together is spelled out only in the agreement, which is not public.

Timing also needs care. Drive Tesla reported on October 15 that the software is expected by over-the-air update in December 2026 and attributes to Rivian's James Philbin that Point-to-Point "remained on track for a year-end debut." Rivian's page says late 2026.

What this means for Tesla owners

Nothing in your car changes. The comparison worth making is about access models. Drive Tesla says the feature works much like Tesla's FSD, but it offers no feature-by-feature comparison and neither do we. What is different on paper is the front door: Rivian is rationing early access by subscription, usage and safety metrics, with an NDA. If you are weighing a Rivian against a Tesla, those terms are worth reading before the feature list. Our earlier look at the other side of the Rivian cabin covers R2 owner questions.

What we could not confirm

We did not see the Participation Agreement or the NDA. We could not retrieve Motor1's report. We have not tested Point-to-Point, and no independent road test exists because participants are under NDA. Pricing and sensor details above are single-outlet claims.

FAQ

Can I apply with a Gen 1 R1? No, per Rivian's page.

Will I be paid? No. Participation is unpaid.
