Could Your Model Y Join Tesla's Robotaxi Fleet? Seven Questions, Answered Only With What Tesla Has Said
By EV Bandit | Updated October 25, 2026
- On Tesla's Q3 call (October 21), AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said the first customer-owned cars could join the Robotaxi network around the second quarter of 2027.
- The outlets differ on models: TechSpot and Digital Trends frame it as Model Y owners; Not a Tesla App says the report does not tie the timeline to a specific model.
- Customer cars would work only in designated geofenced areas where the Robotaxi service exists, per Digital Trends.
- Owner pay, insurance, and how charging and cleaning would be handled are not disclosed.
- Not a Tesla App says customer cars would run the same unsupervised software, which Tesla plans to release to customers as part of FSD v15.
Tesla gave Model Y owners a date for the old robotaxi promise this week, and a long list of things it did not say. Not a Tesla App quotes Elluswamy on the call: “We suspect somewhere around Q2 next year is when we can turn on some of the first customer vehicles.” TechSpot and Digital Trends reported the same timing independently on October 22.
A date is not a program. Below, the questions owners in our group are likely to ask first, each answered only from what Tesla and the outlets covering the call have said. Where nobody has said, we say so.
1. When could my car join?
“Around Q2 2027,” for “some of the first” customer vehicles, per the Elluswamy quote above. TechSpot puts the wording as “around the second quarter of 2027.” That is a target for a first batch, not a date every owner can count on.
2. Is it my Model Y, specifically?
The outlets differ. TechSpot and Digital Trends frame it as Model Y owners. Not a Tesla App says the report does not tie the timeline to a specific model, while noting Tesla has long said Model 3 and Model Y owners would be able to join. We could not find Tesla's own words naming a model for this first group.
3. What software would run it?
Digital Trends reports Elluswamy said the software behind Cybercab and Model Y robotaxis is essentially the same. Not a Tesla App says customer cars would run that same unsupervised software, which Tesla plans to release to customers as part of FSD v15. Our earlier post on Tesla's own maps covers what is known about v15 so far.

4. Can I send it anywhere?
No, according to the coverage. Not a Tesla App says the remaining requirement is letting customer cars operate inside Tesla's geofences and fleet-management system. Digital Trends adds that customer cars would work only in designated geofenced areas where the Robotaxi service exists. Not a Tesla App reports unsupervised FSD would likely start in select U.S. areas, with Austin mentioned as a possible first city. That last point is the outlet's reading, not a Tesla commitment.
5. How would I be paid, and who insures it?
Not disclosed. Digital Trends says Tesla has not detailed owner earnings, insurance arrangements or vehicle requirements. Not a Tesla App says the report does not mention insurance at all, and that Tesla has not explained how revenue sharing would work.
6. Who charges and cleans it?
Not disclosed. Not a Tesla App notes Tesla has not said how charging, cleaning and fleet management would be handled for owner-provided cars. We are not going to guess.
7. Is the Cybercab the thing to wait for instead?
Tesla's own framing leans toward Tesla owning them. InsideEVs quotes VP Lars Moravy on the call: “In short, we're trying to get to customers by the end of this year, 2026,” while all current production is going into Tesla's own fleet. It also quotes Elon Musk: “The vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be essentially Tesla-owned and transport as a service.” A related Digital Trends headline puts the takeaway bluntly: plan on riding a Cybercab, not parking one.

What this means for owners
Nothing you need to do today. There is no sign-up, no price and no requirement list. The useful posture is the boring one: treat Q2 2027 as a stated target from a company with a long record of moved dates, and watch for the three documents that would make this real, a list of eligible models, an insurance framework and a payout structure. Until they exist, a car that earns money for you is still an idea.
