Tesla's Paint Shop Wraps Your Car in Pixels — Here's What Real Film Costs in 2026
Tesla pushed 2026.27.200 on September 1, and buried in a release note stack that includes Grok commands, Preferred Routes and Caraoke scoring is a feature that quietly turns every Tesla owner into an amateur wrap designer: Custom Wraps.
Open the Tesla app, go to Creations → Wrap → Upload, pick a PNG off your camera roll, and your car's 3D visualisation is wearing it. No USB drive, no laptop, no appointment. It is genuinely one of the best free things Tesla has shipped this year.
It is also, to be blunt, pixels. Walk outside and the car is still whatever colour Fremont painted it. So here is the honest companion piece: what the same look costs in actual film, what it costs to protect the paint underneath, and which pieces are worth doing first.
First, the free part — how Custom Wraps actually works
Tesla maintains an official GitHub repository of wrap templates. Download the template for your car, paint inside the white areas, save it out, send it over. The spec is strict and it is the reason most people's first upload fails:
- PNG only. Not JPG, not HEIC.
- 512×512 to 1024×1024 pixels. Use the template size.
- 1 MB maximum per file.
- Filename: letters, numbers, underscores, dashes and spaces only, 30 characters max.
- Up to 10 wraps from the app, plus 10 more from a USB drive.
The mobile app route needs Tesla app v4.59.0 or later. If you would rather use a USB stick, format it exFAT (or FAT32 / MS-DOS FAT — NTFS is not supported), make a folder named exactly Wraps at the root, and drop the PNGs in. Either way you apply it in the car at Toybox → Paint Shop → Wraps.
Tesla's repo now carries templates for Cybertruck, Model 3, Model 3 (2024+) in Standard/Premium and Performance, Model Y, Model Y (2025+) in Standard, Premium and Performance, Model S (2021+), Model S (2025+) Plaid, Model X (2021+) — and Model Y L, which is a nice tell for the long-wheelbase crowd waiting on deliveries.
Do this first. It is free, it takes ten minutes, and seeing your car in satin military green on the touchscreen is a remarkably cheap way to find out you actually hate satin military green.
1. Colour change without touching the paint — $799, one afternoon
The closest real-world equivalent to what Paint Shop does on screen is a colour-change PPF — a film that changes the colour and protects what is underneath, rather than paint that does neither.
The Tesla Model Y Juniper DIY PPF Colour Change Kit runs $799.00, pre-cut for the Juniper, in Frozen Black, Pure White, Crystal Lemon Yellow or a custom colour. Tesla charges thousands for a factory colour you cannot undo. This comes off.
The listing quotes roughly an hour for the DIY route. Be realistic: an hour is what it takes someone who has done it before, working in a clean garage, with a heat gun and a second pair of hands. 2. Full-body film — $1,399.95 clear, $1,699.95 in colour
Step up from a kit to a full pre-cut body set and the numbers get serious, but they are still a fraction of a shop's labour-in quote.

- Clear / Stealth PPF Wrap — Model Y Juniper 2026+, $1,399.95. Keeps your paint colour, adds gloss or turns it satin. Again, Premium RWD/AWD cuts are the ones to order.
- Clear / Stealth PPF Wrap — Model 3 Highland 2024-2026, $1,399.95. Standard, Premium and Performance Highland, with or without logo cutouts.
- Clear / Stealth PPF Wrap — Cybertruck, $299.95 to $1,199.95. Partial front at the bottom of that range, full front at $399.95, whole truck at the top, clear or stealth.
One thing worth saying plainly: the “edge to edge” and “wrapped edges” options are not a style choice. Wrapped edges look better and last longer, and they require disassembly. If you are fitting this yourself in a driveway, take the standard fit.
3. If you only film three panels, film these
Most rock chips land in three places: the leading edge of the hood, the front bumper, and the fender just behind the wheel. Cover those and you have handled the overwhelming majority of the damage a Tesla actually collects.

All three together, in the mini/8mil configuration, comes to roughly $290. That is a rounding error against a repaint and it is the single best-value move on this page.
4. Chrome delete — the cheapest way to change how your car reads
If you want your car to look different from thirty feet away and you have thirty dollars, this is the move. Blacking out the bright window trim changes the whole read of the car — and unlike a colour change, nobody who sees it can tell you did it yourself.

5. Small parts, disproportionate payoff
Everyone films the hood and forgets the charge port, which is the one panel you physically abrade on a daily basis.

Read this before you buy the smoke. Tinting exterior lighting is regulated, and the rules differ state by state and country by country. The clear 8mil gets you the chip protection with none of the ambiguity. If you want the smoked look, check your local rules first — we would rather you bought the clear one than got a ticket wearing ours.
6. Wrap the inside while you are at it
Tesla's gloss-black interior panels are a fingerprint museum and they scratch if you look at them wrong. Film is the fix, and it is cheap.

- $0 — upload a Custom Wrap and live with it on screen for a week. Free opinions are the best kind.
- ~$30 — charge port wrap. Protects the one panel guaranteed to get scraped.
- ~$50 — chrome delete or B-pillar film. Biggest visual change per dollar on this page.
- ~$290 — fenders, mini hood and mini bumper PPF. This is the one that pays for itself.
- $799–$1,699.95 — colour change or full-body film, when you have decided the screen version was right.
