EV Bandit guide to Tesla's updated U.S. referral rewards

Tesla Ended Car Referral Rewards in the U.S. and Now Pays Owners in FSD. Who Qualifies, What Changed, and Where the Fine Print Disagrees

By EV Bandit | Updated November 1, 2026 | 6 min read

At a glance. As of October 30, 2026, Tesla's U.S. referral program no longer rewards car purchases. It rewards Full Self-Driving (Supervised) instead: a free month for the person you refer and, if they subscribe, a free month or a $99 Tesla Credit for you. Three outlets agree on the shape of it and disagree on some details.
Key takeaways
  • Electrek: buying a Tesla with a friend's code now earns neither person anything, and Tesla did not announce the change.
  • Not a Tesla App says Tesla announced the FSD program on X; both it and Drive Tesla describe a free month of FSD for the referred person.
  • The outlets differ on whether the referrer's reward is a free month or a $99 credit (Electrek) or depends on how the referrer holds FSD (Not a Tesla App, Drive Tesla).
  • Per Drive Tesla, Canada's vehicle referral program is unchanged and the FSD program is not available there.

Tesla has stopped paying people to refer a car in the United States. Electrek reported on October 30 that vehicle purchases no longer qualify for buyer or referrer rewards under the new program, which pays in FSD (Supervised) instead. The line that sums it up is Electrek's own:

“Buy a Tesla with a friend's code today and neither of you gets anything.” Electrek, October 30, 2026

That is a big shift for a program that, as Electrek recounts, offered buyers $1,000 off a Model S, X, Y or 3 and referrers $500 in credit when it relaunched in August 2024. Below: what changed, who can take part, and a table of the places where the three outlets covering it do not line up.

What changed, before and after

Item Before (U.S.) Now (U.S.) Reported by
Car purchase referral Last version: $250 in Tesla Credits plus three free FSD months for the buyer Ended. No buyer or referrer reward for a car Not a Tesla App, Drive Tesla, Electrek
What the referred person gets Vehicle-linked reward One free month of FSD (Supervised), if eligible All three
What the referrer gets Vehicle-linked reward If the friend subscribes: a free month of FSD, or $99 in Tesla Credits (see conflict table) All three
Other things still rewarded Solar, Powerwall, demo drives Per Electrek: solar for buyers; solar, first demo drives (up to 30 per account lifetime) and FSD for referrers Electrek; Drive Tesla (FSD and energy products)
Where it lives Tesla app “Refer and Earn,” Tesla app 4.62.0 or later Electrek; Not a Tesla App

Who qualifies, in four questions

  1. Do you pay for FSD? Per Electrek, a referrer must pay monthly or have bought FSD outright before Tesla stopped selling it (Electrek dates that to February 14, 2026, with the subscription at $99 a month). Owners who received FSD through a one-year grant cannot take part, according to both Electrek and Not a Tesla App.
  2. Is your friend eligible? Electrek says they need a registered Tesla with compatible hardware, no FSD payment in the past 12 months, and no outright FSD purchase. Anyone given a free FSD trial with a new car is excluded until 12 months after that trial ends.
  3. Is your friend already an owner? That is now allowed. Not a Tesla App notes that, unlike the old vehicle program, existing owners can be referred.
  4. Are you in the U.S.? The FSD program is U.S. only. Drive Tesla reports that Canada's vehicle referral program is unchanged and the FSD program is not available there. Check Tesla Canada's page for your own terms.

Where the three outlets disagree

We read all three articles in full. We could not open Tesla's referral pages ourselves, so everything below is as relayed by the outlets, and where they split we show both versions.

Point Electrek Not a Tesla App Drive Tesla
Referrer's reward A free month of FSD or a $99 Tesla Credit if the referred person starts paying Subscribers get one free month; outright owners get a $99 Tesla Credit A free month if the referrer subscribes; $99 in Tesla Credits if the referrer bought outright
When the referrer is rewarded Flags a conflict: Tesla's FSD page says during the trial, the main Refer and Earn page says after the trial If the friend subscribes during the trial If the friend subscribes during the trial
Annual cap 12 rewards per calendar year 12 rewards per calendar year, resetting January 1 Not mentioned
Credit expiry 12 months; cannot be cashed out Pending until the Grant Date, then expire 12 months later Not mentioned
The old vehicle reward $1,000 buyer / $500 referrer at the August 2024 relaunch “Up to $250” in credits plus three free FSD months for buyers (last version) “A US$250 credit” plus three free FSD months to the buyer
Announcement Tesla did not announce the removal of vehicle rewards; the referral page is stamped “Updated February 24, 2026,” so the date vehicles were dropped is unclear Says Tesla announced the FSD program on X Reports the change on October 30

The two readings of the referrer's reward are compatible if the reward depends on how you hold FSD, which is how Not a Tesla App and Drive Tesla describe it. Electrek's wording reads as a choice. We cannot settle that without Tesla's own terms, so treat the exact payout as something to confirm in the app.

What this means for owners

If you were planning to order a car with a friend's code, do not count on a reward from the code. Confirm what, if anything, the order page offers before you pay. If you subscribe to FSD, the new program is a way to hand a friend a month and possibly earn one back. If you hold FSD through a grant, you are outside it for now.

Electrek's read is that the change mainly mines the existing fleet for subscriptions rather than adding cars; that is the outlet's opinion, not a Tesla statement. Where do I find the new program?

Under “Refer and Earn” in the Tesla app, version 4.62.0 or later, per Electrek and Not a Tesla App.

What does my friend get?

A one-month FSD trial if eligible, per all three outlets.

Can I cash out the credit?

No. Electrek says the credits expire after 12 months and cannot be cashed out.

Is this available in Canada?

Drive Tesla reports the FSD referral program is not available in Canada and that Canada's vehicle referral program is unchanged.

What we could not confirm

  • Tesla's own referral terms. We relied on three outlets that read them.
  • Whether the referrer's reward is a choice or depends on how FSD is held.
  • Whether the reward triggers during or after the trial.
  • The date Tesla removed vehicle rewards.
