Powershare Home Backup Reaches Model 3 and Y. Here Is What Else Belongs in a Blackout Trunk
By EV Bandit | Updated October 7, 2026
Tesla Energy now says a new Model 3 or Model Y can power a house. Electrek reports Powershare Home Backup is open to new Model 3 and Model Y ordered on or after October 1, 2026, paired with a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector.
Tesla’s line, as Electrek quotes it: “Extend your home backup by over 2 days with your vehicle.” Drive Tesla confirms the Powerwall 3 requirement and says Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ support is “coming soon.”

Who this is for, and who it is not
Electrek lists new Model 3 and Model Y ordered from October 1, all Cybertrucks, and possibly older cars with PCS2 Lite inverter hardware. Model S and X are excluded, and it is U.S. and Puerto Rico only. If you do not own a Powerwall 3, nothing changes for your house tonight.
We do not sell Powerwalls or Powershare hardware. What we sell is the gear for every other blackout, where the car is just a car. Three things earn a place in the trunk.
1. Light that does not need the car

Four lights, a carabiner on each. Buy AAAs separately. It is the cheapest thing in this article and the one you will use first.
2. A way to refill the car from somewhere else

This is not backup power. It charges the car from a 240V outlet, say at a friend’s place with power. Different job from Powershare, which sends power out. Our charging adapters guide and Wall Connector alternative explain the plug types.
3. The roadside repair that keeps you moving

Storm outages bring debris. A kit is cheaper than a tow, and it has nothing to do with the grid.
What this means for owners
If you are buying a new Tesla with a Powerwall 3, Powershare is a legitimate reason to ask. Everyone else: the lights, the charger and the tire kit are the sensible blackout trunk. Camping instead? See our V2L camp kit.
