EV Bandit guide to home charging with a mobile connector and dryer outlet adapter

Tesla's Wall Connector Just Hit $585 — Here's How to Skip It Entirely

Tesla raised Wall Connector prices again this week. As of September 17, the standard Wall Connector is listed at $585 in the US, and the Universal Wall Connector — the one with a J1772 adapter built in for non-Tesla EVs — is up to $660. Per Drive Tesla Canada, that's the fourth increase on these units since early June, and the standard connector alone is now roughly 29% more expensive than it was three months ago.

If you already own a Tesla, you probably already own the thing that actually charges it: the Mobile Connector that used to ship in the frunk. Here's what we sell that turns an existing outlet into a charging setup, without paying Tesla's hardwired-install prices.

1. Skip the Hardwired Charger: Plug Into a Dryer Outlet Instead

AC WORKS EV charging adapter for Tesla, dryer outlet to Tesla Mobile Connector adapter
$46.99 for the 4-prong dryer-outlet version, $95.00 for the 3-prong version. Neither needs an electrician if you already have the outlet.

This adapter plugs into a standard 14-30 dryer outlet on one end and your Tesla Mobile Connector on the other. If your garage or laundry room already has a 4-prong 240V dryer outlet, the $46.99 version gets you Level 2 charging speeds tonight. Older homes with a 3-prong 240V outlet need the $95.00 version instead — same idea, different plug. Either way, you're charging at home for a fraction of what a hardwired $585 Wall Connector plus electrician visit costs, using power you're probably already paying for.

The honest caveat: if you don't have a 240V outlet anywhere near where you park, you're back to needing an electrician regardless of which charger you buy. This is the shortcut for people who already have the outlet and just need the right adapter.

2. Keep the Mobile Connector From Living in a Pile on the Garage Floor

$32.99. Wall-mount bracket for Model S, 3, X and Y Mobile Connector setups.

Tesla's Wall Connector comes with its own cable management built in. A Mobile Connector plus dryer adapter doesn't — it's designed to travel in your frunk, not hang neatly on a wall. This bracket holds the connector head and coils the cable so your DIY setup looks intentional instead of like an extension cord experiment.

3. Cybertruck Owners Get Their Own Version

$25.99. The newest fitment in this lineup, and stock is thin — just 2 left as of this check.

Same concept as above, sized and branded for Cybertruck owners running the same dryer-outlet setup. It's real stock, not a placeholder listing, but it's a small batch — if you want one, don't wait for a restock announcement that hasn't been scheduled yet.

4. Charging Away From Home Doesn't Have to Mean Supercharger Pricing Either

$249.99 in black, $199.99 in white. Rated for 3-4x the speed of a standard J1772 adapter.

The Wall Connector price hikes are a home-charging story, but the same instinct — don't pay Tesla more than you have to — applies on the road too. A Tesla-to-J1772 adapter opens up the much larger network of non-Tesla Level 2 stations at hotels, grocery stores, and parking garages, so a slow home-charging night doesn't have to turn into a Supercharger stop you didn't plan for. Two color options, two price points, same adapter.

The Bottom Line

Tesla's hardware pricing keeps climbing — four increases on the Wall Connector line since June, per Drive Tesla Canada, with the standard unit up roughly 29% in three months and the Universal model up even more. None of that changes what actually delivers power to your car: the Mobile Connector most Teslas already come with. If you've got the right outlet, a $47-$95 adapter plus a $26-$33 wall bracket gets you the same charging speed as Tesla's $585 hardwired unit, minus the install. This isn't an anti-Tesla argument — it's just math, and the math has been getting more lopsided every few weeks this year.
