EV Bandit guide to Cybertruck L-track bed gear, MOLLE panels, and cargo protection for less

Tesla's $985 Cybertruck Bed Gear Box Runs on L-Track — Here's What Else Fits Those Rails for Less

Tesla just gave the Cybertruck two accessories that finally treat the bed like a truck bed instead of an afterthought: a $350 Tailgate Utility Track and a $985 lockable Bed Gear Box, both released the first week of September and both built around the same idea — a single aluminum L-track rail running the width of the bed, with load stops and T-slots for anything you want to strap down or bolt on.

It's a good system. It's also a system Tesla doesn't own exclusively. The Cybertruck's bed already ships with L-track channels, and that rail spec is the same one used across the MOLLE and cargo-tie-down world — which means a chunk of what Tesla just launched, you can already build yourself for less, using the same rails.

One honest caveat up front: nothing below is a locking box. If what you actually want is Tesla's $985 feature — gear that stays locked in the bed and never comes in and out with each trip — the Gear Box is the only thing on the market that does that today, and it isn't cheap for a reason. What follows is for the other 90% of owners who just want the bed organized, protected, and tied down without spending four figures on it.

1. L-Track Molle Trunk Bed Shelf — the direct rail-for-rail alternative

L-Track MOLLE shelf panel mounted to the Cybertruck truck bed rail system
$399.99 for the Set of 1 shelf panel — $585 less than Tesla's Gear Box, mounted to the same native L-track. Only 2 in stock as of this check.

This is the closest thing we stock to a direct answer to Tesla's Gear Box, and the comparison only goes so far. It's a MOLLE panel shelf, not a lockbox — it mounts to the Cybertruck's factory L-track and gives you a flat, load-rated surface plus MOLLE webbing to strap gear to, but there's no lid and no lock. What it does get you: a rail-mounted organizing surface for $399.99 instead of $985, using hardware the truck already has. The Set of 2 ($699.99) and Set of 3 ($1,099.99) configurations are both out of stock right now — only the single-panel Set of 1 is available, and at just 2 units on the shelf, it won't stay that way long.

2. Trunk Bed Molle Panel (Set of 2) — build out the rail system further

Set of two MOLLE panels for Tesla Cybertruck truck bed L-track mounting
$199.99 for two panels — pairs with the shelf above to extend MOLLE tie-down coverage along the bed walls. Down to the last unit in stock.

Smaller companion pieces to the shelf above: two MOLLE panels that mount to the same L-track and give you tie-down points along the bed sides rather than just the floor. Useful if you're hauling irregular gear — coolers, totes, ladders — that needs to be pinned from more than one direction. Like the shelf, this is down to a single unit in stock, so if the idea is right for your setup, it's worth not sitting on it.

3. Rear Bumper Tailgate Protector — the spot Tesla's new track actually loads from

TPE tailgate and bed step protector installed on a Tesla Cybertruck rear bumper
$109 in TPE; also available in Carbon Fiber Pattern, Chrome Black, or Matte Black finish, all $99.99, for the Cybertruck fitment.

Tesla's new Tailgate Utility Track is designed to hold oversized cargo that hangs off the back of the bed — lumber, a cooler, anything too long to close the tailgate on. That's exactly the load path that chews up a bare tailgate edge over time. This TPE cover wraps the rear bumper and bed step in a protective trim layer, available in four finishes for the Cybertruck: TPE ($109), Carbon Fiber Pattern, Chrome Black, and Matte Black (the latter three at $99.99 each). The same listing also carries 2024 Model 3 cuts, so pick a Cybertruck option.

4. Truck Bed Mat Set — cargo liner, frunk mat, and rear sub-trunk mat

TPE cargo bed mat, frunk mat, and rear sub-trunk mat set for Tesla Cybertruck
$179.99 for the 3-piece set; the bed mat alone is $159.99 if you only need the main cargo area covered.

Before you organize the bed, protect it. This set covers the three cargo-carrying spaces on the Cybertruck at once — the main bed, the frunk, and the rear sub-trunk under the bed floor — in heavy-duty TPE that shrugs off mud, tools, and whatever the Bed Gear Box crowd is hauling. Buy it as the full $179.99 bundle, or the bed mat on its own for $159.99 if the frunk and sub-trunk aren't priorities for you. Good stock across every configuration.

5. Door Side Storage Box — Front & Rear Organizer Tray, Set of 4

Set of four door side storage organizer trays installed in a Tesla Cybertruck cabin
$85 for all four door trays — cabin-side organization to pair with whatever you've moved out to the bed.

Not a bed accessory, but the natural finishing move: if you're rearranging where gear lives now that the bed's organized, these four door-side trays reclaim the dead space in the Cybertruck's oversized door pockets for the smaller stuff — tools, chargers, cables — you don't want rattling around loose. $85 for the full front-and-rear set, in stock now.

The honest bottom line

Tesla's Bed Gear Box is the only lockable, factory-fit option on the market right now, and if that's the specific job you need done, it's worth the $985 — especially since Long Range and Dual Motor AWD trims need the separate L-Track accessory installed before the Gear Box will even mount, according to Teslarati's reporting on the launch. Everything above is the other job: organizing, protecting, and tying down a Cybertruck bed using the same rail system, for a fraction of the price, with the tradeoff being nothing here locks.
