Tesla Stuck Assist Mode: How the New Traction Controls Work

Tesla's 2026.26 Summer Update quietly added something most owners haven't found yet: a Traction Control Mode menu with three settings, including a dedicated Stuck Assist mode for snow, mud, and sand. If you drive a 2024+ Model 3, it's new to you as of this update. Here's exactly where it lives, what each mode actually changes, and the gear that keeps the mess outside your cabin when you use it.


Where to find Traction Control Modes

Tesla buried this one in a submenu a lot of people never open:

Controls → Dynamics → Traction Control Mode

One detail worth burning into memory: the mode resets to Auto at the start of every drive. You cannot set it and forget it. If you park at a trailhead overnight and come back to a muddy pull-out in the morning, you have to re-select Stuck Assist before you try to move. That reset behavior is straight out of Tesla's own release notes, and it's the single thing most likely to trip owners up.

The three modes, explained

Auto

The default, and where your car lands at the start of every drive. Standard traction control behavior for normal road conditions — the system cuts torque the instant it detects a wheel spinning faster than the others. For 99% of driving, this is correct and you should leave it alone.

Slippery Surface

For icy or wet roads. This is the "be gentle" setting — it's tuned to deliver power more smoothly and intervene earlier so you don't break traction on a low-grip surface in the first place. Think black ice on an on-ramp, a wet painted crosswalk, or a snow-packed neighborhood street.

Stuck Assist

This one is the opposite philosophy, and it's the one worth understanding. Tesla describes it as the mode to use "when stuck in snow, mud, or sand."

Normal traction control is actively working against you when you're bogged down. The moment a wheel slips, the system yanks power — which is exactly what you don't want when you need a wheel to spin up and dig down to firmer ground, or to build the back-and-forth rocking momentum that gets a car out of a rut. Stuck Assist loosens that leash and permits more wheel slip so you can actually work the car free.

Use it deliberately, not casually. More permitted wheelspin means more heat in the tires and drivetrain, and a lot more material thrown into your wheel wells and undercarriage. This is a recovery tool for a car that's already stuck — not a mode to leave on while driving down a dirt road.

Who actually gets this in 2026.26

This is where the coverage has been muddy, so let's be precise:

  • 2024+ Model 3 (Highland) — this is the group getting Traction Control Modes new in update 2026.26.
  • Refreshed Model Y (Juniper) and Cybertruck — you already had these settings. Nothing new here, but if you've never gone looking for them, now you know where they are.
  • Older Model 3, older Model Y, Model S and Model X — not included in this release.

Update 2026.26 was released on July 26, 2026, with a follow-up point release, 2026.26.1, carrying bug fixes and security improvements. Rollouts are staged, so if you don't see it yet, it's coming.

A realistic Stuck Assist playbook

  1. Stop digging first. If you've already spun for ten seconds and gone nowhere, stop. You're only deepening the hole.
  2. Look at what's under the car. If you're high-centered on a berm or a rock, no traction mode on earth fixes that. That's a jack-and-recovery situation.
  3. Clear ahead of the tires. Kick away the packed snow or sand piled in front of each drive wheel so the tire has somewhere to go.
  4. Select Stuck Assist at Controls → Dynamics → Traction Control Mode.
  5. Use gentle, steady throttle. Flooring it just polishes a hole. Rock the car forward and back with light inputs and let momentum build.
  6. Straighten the wheel. Turned front wheels plow instead of roll. Point them straight ahead unless you're deliberately steering onto firmer ground.
  7. Know when to stop. If a few attempts don't move you, call for a tow. Burned tires and an overheated drive unit cost far more than a recovery call.

The gear that makes this survivable

Here's the part nobody writes about. Stuck Assist works by letting your wheels sling material everywhere. The mode is free. The cleanup is not. If you're going to use your Tesla anywhere that Stuck Assist is relevant, these are the parts that take the abuse so your paint and carpet don't.

1. Mud flaps — the single highest-value part here

Teslas ship without mud flaps, and the rear quarter panels and rocker panels pay for it. Spin a wheel in wet sand and you'll sandblast your own paint. No-drill sets install in minutes.

2. All-weather floor liners — because you're getting out of the car

Every recovery involves standing in the thing you're stuck in and then getting back into the driver's seat with it on your boots. Carpet mats are a one-way trip.

3. Jack pads — for when Stuck Assist isn't the answer

Sometimes the honest diagnosis is that you're high-centered or you've picked up a puncture, and no software mode solves it. Lifting a Tesla without proper pucks risks crushing the battery pack seam — the jack points are not the pinch welds you'd use on a normal car.


The bottom line

Traction Control Modes are a genuinely useful addition, and Stuck Assist is the kind of feature you'll be very glad exists the one time you need it. Just remember the two things that will actually determine whether it helps you: it resets to Auto every single drive, and it works by throwing everything under your car at your car. Set up for the second one before you need the first.
