EV Bandit safety guide to Tesla Emergency Drive Away prompts and a calmer charging routine

A Driver Appears to Have Triggered Tesla's Emergency Drive Away by Accident. What the Prompts Ask, What Tesla Says It Costs, and a Calmer Charging Routine

By EV Bandit | Updated October 30, 2026

At a glance. A Reddit video from an Austin Supercharger on Sunday, October 25 appears to show a driver setting off Tesla’s new Emergency Drive Away by mistake and pulling the cable away with the car. Tesla says the feature damages the vehicle and the stall and can cost up to $25,000 to repair.
Key takeaways
  • Teslarati, Drive Tesla and Not a Tesla App all reported the clip on October 28; each describes the activation as apparently accidental.
  • Emergency Drive Away arrived with software 2026.38.3. Shifting out of Park while plugged in shows a red warning; confirming takes holding the brake and tapping Activate.
  • Tesla says repairs can reach up to $25,000 and that misuse brings “additional penalties.” Nobody has reported whether this driver will be charged.
  • The outlets disagree on the car: Drive Tesla says a Model 3, Not a Tesla App says a Model Y.

A driver at an Austin Supercharger appears to have triggered Emergency Drive Away on Sunday morning, October 25, and left the stall with the connector still attached. Teslarati, Drive Tesla and Not a Tesla App all trace the footage to a Reddit post. It is the first widely reported use of a feature Tesla introduced about four weeks ago for emergencies only.

The driver “only seemed to half read the prompts,” the Reddit poster said, as quoted by Not a Tesla App.

What Tesla says the feature is for

Tesla’s charging team announced Emergency Drive Away on October 1. Electrek reported Tesla’s own words: “Emergency Drive Away lets you shift into Drive while still plugged into a Supercharger.” It requires software 2026.38.3, works at U.S. Superchargers, and excludes Model S and X built before 2021. Tesla says it is for emergencies only, and Electrek quotes the company warning that “Use of this feature will damage your vehicle and the Supercharger.” Per Drive Tesla, Tesla added that “deliberate misuse will invoke additional penalties,” without specifying them.

Teslarati lists Tesla’s stated reasons for using it: you face an immediate threat to your life or personal safety, leaving immediately is necessary, exiting the vehicle is unsafe, or unplugging would unreasonably delay your departure or create a safety risk. Teslarati says Tesla requires a service inspection after any use.

The poster suggested stronger warnings to stop people “mindlessly clicking through the prompts,” according to Not a Tesla App.

The four-second check before you shift out of Park

This is our checklist, built from the flow the outlets describe. It is not a Tesla procedure.

  1. Look at the screen before you shift. Per Not a Tesla App, shifting out of Park while plugged in brings up a red warning. If you see it, you are about to leave with the cable attached.
  2. Release the connector the normal way. Electrek lists the touchscreen, the Tesla app or the handle button, then waiting for the latch to release.
  3. Do not tap Activate unless one of Tesla’s listed emergencies applies. Confirming takes holding the brake and tapping Activate, per Drive Tesla and Not a Tesla App.
  4. If it happens by mistake, expect a service visit. Tesla requires one for the charge port, and has not said how it will treat accidental use.

Charging gear that tidies the routine, and what it does not do

To be plain: none of the items below stops anyone from triggering Emergency Drive Away. They solve a different job, getting cables and adapters off the floor and into a place where you handle them on purpose. A less cluttered charging routine is one less thing to rush through at the stall. Our three in-stock picks:

1. Hang the home cable

Tesla Charging Cable Organizer wall bracket for Model S, X, 3 and Y mobile connector
The Tesla Charging Cable Organizer ($32.99) is a wall bracket for your home charging cable. The listing says it fits the American version only.

The wall bracket holds the connector and lets you coil a cable of around ten metres, per its listing, so it stays off the garage floor. It protects the connector from rain and dust and keeps the cable from kinking. It is for home charging, not the Supercharger stall; the point is to build the habit of seating and releasing the connector deliberately.

2. Give your adapters a home

The Cyberpack carry case ($70.99) has two removable inserts for a CCS adapter or a Tesla to J1772 adapter, plus Velcro dividers and a mesh pocket.

If you carry a CCS or Tesla-to-J1772 adapter, loose in the trunk is where it gets scratched and forgotten. The Cyberpack is a matte PU leather case with the two inserts the listing describes, and the inserts come out when you want a plain travel bag. It is water resistant, per the listing, not waterproof. Adapters are not included.

3. For Cybertruck owners: a dock for the adapter

The Charging Adapter Storage Box ($34.99) is a Cybertruck-only dock; the adapter is not included. Its title says 2023-2025, its description says 2024-2025, so check your truck’s year.

This ABS box holds a charging adapter in place so it does not rattle while you drive, per the listing, and slides in and out without tools. It fits the Cybertruck only. Model 3 and Model Y owners can skip this one and go to the Cyberpack above.

What this means for owners

The honest takeaway is about the prompts, not the product list. Emergency Drive Away is meant to be hard to trigger and costly if you do, and one clip suggests the friction can be clicked through. If you charge at Superchargers, make shifting a deliberate step: read the red screen, release the connector, then go.
